The numbers coming out of Big Tech’s most recent earnings season are difficult to contextualise in the abstract. Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon are collectively on track to deploy $760 billion in capital expenditure on artificial intelligence this year alone, up from $413 billion in 2025. That figure represents not just server farms and semiconductor orders. It represents a fundamental reorientation of how digital infrastructure is built, who profits from it, and critically, how smaller players across every industry are forced to adapt.

Where Digital Ad Budgets Are Actually Shifting

The most immediate downstream effect of Big Tech’s AI arms race is visible in the advertising market. Google and Meta together still command the majority of UK digital ad spend, and as both companies integrate AI into their ad-buying systems, the gap between sophisticated advertisers and everyone else is widening fast. Automated bidding, AI-generated creative variants, and predictive audience modelling are becoming default features rather than premium options.

For operators in the online entertainment and iGaming space, this shift is particularly pronounced. Platforms like fiestaslots operate in a segment where audience targeting precision can directly affect acquisition costs, and the new generation of AI-powered ad tools is changing what that precision looks like in practice. Sports betting and online casino brands that moved early on programmatic AI tools are reporting tighter cost-per-acquisition ratios, while those relying on manual campaign management are feeling the squeeze from rising click costs driven by algorithmic bidding wars.

The dynamic is straightforward: when Google’s systems become more automated, advertisers who understand how to structure campaigns for AI optimisation get rewarded. Those who do not find their budgets delivering less reach for more money.

What Small Businesses Are Actually Getting from the AI Build-Out

Small business owners watching the $760 billion headlines could be forgiven for feeling excluded from the story. The reality is more nuanced.

Much of Big Tech’s capital expenditure flows into infrastructure that eventually powers the tools SMEs already use: smarter search ad targeting, AI writing assistants embedded in marketing platforms, automated customer segmentation in email tools. That adoption curve is happening in large part because the underlying AI capacity being built by large cloud providers is being packaged into accessible, affordable software for businesses of every size.

But the benefits are not evenly distributed. Businesses in sectors with complex customer journeys, including finance, retail, and digital entertainment, are extracting more value from AI tools because their data environments are richer. A small online sports betting platform generates more behavioural signal per user session than a local plumber’s website. That signal advantage compounds over time, giving data-rich operators a structural head start when it comes to training audience models and personalising on-site experiences.

How AI Is Reshaping the User Experience Across Digital Platforms

Beyond advertising, the $760 billion build-out is reshaping what users actually encounter when they interact with digital products. This is where the iGaming sector’s experience becomes instructive for businesses in other verticals.

Online betting and casino platforms have been running personalisation engines at scale for years. AI-driven recommendations, adaptive bonus structures, and behavioural CRM systems are now standard across the sector. That adoption rate is ahead of most other consumer-facing industries, and it reflects how quickly audience expectations escalate once personalisation becomes the norm. According to Forbes, 54% of small businesses already use AI marketing tools, with another 27% planning to adopt them this year. That near-universal adoption curve is being driven directly by the infrastructure investment Big Tech is making now.

The lesson for broader digital businesses is that the AI infrastructure being built by Alphabet and Microsoft is not just a cost to absorb as it gets reflected in higher ad prices. It is also a capability layer that, accessed through APIs and third-party software, allows smaller organisations to run experiences that previously required enterprise-scale engineering teams.

What the Arms Race Means for Smaller Operators

The competitive pressure created by Big Tech’s AI spending does not operate uniformly across all business sizes. There are specific patterns worth understanding.

For small and mid-sized digital businesses, the key risks are:

  • Rising CPCs and CPMs as AI bidding systems concentrate spend around high-confidence signals, pushing up auction prices across Google and Meta inventory
  • Creative commoditisation as AI-generated ad copy floods the market, making differentiation harder and brand voice more important than ever
  • Platform dependency as more of the customer journey is mediated by AI systems controlled by a handful of large companies

The iGaming industry has confronted each of these pressures earlier than most sectors, partly because of the competitive intensity of the market. Sports betting brands in the UK have responded by investing in owned media, affiliate partnerships, and data collaborations that reduce dependence on any single paid channel. That playbook is now being studied and adapted by businesses in adjacent verticals, from fintech to subscription media.

The Infrastructure Bet and What Comes Next

According to Statista, the $760 billion projection reflects the upper limit of capital expenditure guidance from Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon combined. The pace of spending is itself a signal: these companies are building infrastructure they expect to monetise over a decade, not a quarter.

For advertisers and digital businesses planning over a one-to-two year horizon, that means several things are likely to remain true regardless of short-term market fluctuations. AI-driven ad tools will become more powerful and more integrated. The advantage of first-party data will increase as targeting precision shifts from third-party cookies to behavioural modelling. And sectors that have already built AI-first customer experience stacks, iGaming among them, will continue to set the benchmark for what digital engagement looks like at scale.

The $760 billion number feels abstract until you trace where it lands. For UK advertisers and small businesses, it lands in the tools they use every day, the auction prices they pay, and the user experiences their customers increasingly expect as standard.
