How British Travellers Are Saving Hundreds With eSIM in 2026

Roaming charges disappeared from British phone bills for four years after 2016, then quietly came back. EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 have each reintroduced daily fees for using data in the European Union, typically running from £2 to £3.50 a day per handset, and none of the big four has signalled any plan to reverse course. For a family of four on a fortnight abroad, that is a bill running into the hundreds before anyone has bought so much as an ice cream. A growing number of British holidaymakers have started buying eSIM data plans instead, some paying from $2.21 for a single Europe-wide plan rather than a daily fee that resets every morning of the trip. Here is what the charges actually look like, network by network, and where the real savings come from.

The Real Cost of Roaming Since Brexit

Before 2021, “roam like at home” rules meant UK travellers used their phone in the EU exactly as they would in Manchester or Cardiff, at no extra cost. Free roaming was a European Union arrangement, and it ended for UK operators once the country left the bloc. Networks were not required to bring back charges straight away, and most held off for a few years. Since then, EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 have each introduced their own daily or monthly roaming fees for EU travel, timed just as outbound holiday numbers were recovering to pre-pandemic levels.

Ofcom research has found that around one in five UK holidaymakers do not realise they can be charged extra for using their phone abroad, and a similar proportion admit they never check their tariff before travelling. Those two facts, taken together, explain a good part of the roaming bill shock stories that surface every summer.

It is not always the traveller’s fault, either. A survey commissioned by Uswitch and carried out by Opinium suggests that close to one in ten UK adults, more than 5 million people, have had their phone connect to a French or Irish network while still standing on British soil, most often on the Kent and Sussex coast or near the Northern Ireland border, where a foreign signal can briefly outmuscle a domestic one. Whatever the precise figure, the wider point holds: roaming charges in 2026 are easier to trigger by accident, and harder to predict, than most people assume.

What EE, Three, Vodafone and O2 Actually Charge

The exact figure depends on the network and the plan, but the range is narrow enough to summarise:

  • EE charges £2.47 a day to use an existing UK data allowance in most EU countries.
  • Vodafone charges between £2.25 and £2.42 a day, depending on the tariff and whether the customer has added its Euro Roam extra.
  • Three charges £2 a day on standard plans, or nothing at all for customers who add its Go Roam in Europe option to their SIM.
  • O2 stands apart from the other three. Most pay-monthly customers get EU roaming included as standard, subject to a 25GB fair-use cap, though business tariffs are typically charged around £2 a day through the O2 Travel Zone.

Leave the EU zone and the numbers roughly double or triple. EE, O2 and Vodafone all charge £6 a day or more for the United States, and Vodafone’s rate for destinations outside Europe reaches £7.86 a day. Three is the cheapest of the four at £5 a day, still well over double its European rate.

The Switzerland and Turkey Surprise

Here is a detail package holiday brochures rarely mention: Switzerland and Turkey, and more recently Albania, are not covered by any of the big four’s EU roaming zone, despite being firm favourites for British skiers and beachgoers. EE applies standard international rates rather than its Europe pricing. O2’s Travel Inclusive Zone stops at the EU plus a handful of neighbours such as Norway and Iceland. Vodafone and Three both classify Switzerland as a “Rest of World” destination on most plans, not a European one.

A skiing week in Verbier or a beach fortnight on the Turkish coast can therefore cost several times more in roaming fees than an equivalent trip to Spain or Portugal. It is understood that this catches out a meaningful share of travellers who assume “Europe” means the same thing to their network as it does on a map, only to find the charge on their bill matches a transatlantic flight rather than a short hop across the Channel.

The Family Trip Maths

Take a family of four, two adults and two teenagers each carrying a phone, on a ten-day summer trip to Spain. On EE’s standard rate of £2.47 a day, that is four phones multiplied by ten days multiplied by £2.47, or £98.80, simply to keep phones working the way they already do at home. A HelloRoam eSIM plan for Europe starts from $2.21, roughly £1.65 at current exchange rates, bought once before departure rather than charged fresh every single day of the holiday.

Add a second trip and the gap widens further. A family that takes a seven-day Easter break in Portugal on top of that ten-day summer holiday is paying roaming across seventeen days a year, per phone. At EE’s rate, that is £167.96 for the year on roaming alone, for one family, before a single call or text is counted.

The bigger number sits with travellers who never add a roaming pass at all and simply let their phone connect abroad by default. Ofcom caps data roaming charges at £49.26, excluding VAT, per person, per billing period, specifically because so many customers exceed their allowance without realising it. For a family of four all roaming unprotected on the same trip, that ceiling adds up to £197.04 before VAT even applies. Ofcom’s own research suggests plenty of people get close to that cap: 39% of those hit by unexpected roaming charges say they did not know they could dispute the bill, and 52% simply paid up without questioning it. That is the scenario behind a headline about saving hundreds. Not the best-case daily rate, but the realistic worst case that a pre-bought eSIM plan removes altogether.

How eSIM Works the Moment You Land

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone rather than a plastic card inserted into a tray. Every iPhone since the XS and most Android flagships from the last four years support it. Instead of hunting for a local SIM shop after landing, or waiting for a UK network’s roaming charge to click in, a traveller buys a data plan before departure, receives a QR code by email, and scans it into the phone’s settings. The plan activates on arrival and connects to a local network at local network speeds, rather than routing data back through a UK operator’s roaming agreement.

Most travel eSIM plans, HelloRoam’s included, cover data only. The traveller’s UK SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, or those can be handled over Wi-Fi calling and messaging apps, while the eSIM handles browsing, maps and messages that rely on data. One option gaining ground with British travellers is HelloRoam, an eSIM service that offers prepaid mobile data across more than 185 countries. Users purchase a plan online, receive a QR code, and install it on a compatible handset without visiting a shop or handling a physical SIM.

The same logic applies well beyond a fortnight in Spain. Anyone heading somewhere remote, trekking through Nepal, say, tends to find that sorting out connectivity in advance matters just as much as sorting out the right boots, since a working data connection abroad is often the fastest route to maps, translation and help if something goes wrong.

Setting Up Before You Fly

The process takes a few minutes rather than a queue at an airport kiosk once the plane has landed. Check the phone supports eSIM, choose a plan sized to the destination and trip length on HelloRoam’s UK eSIM page, and install the QR code at home over Wi-Fi rather than waiting for an airport connection. The eSIM can sit dormant until the phone lands and switches on automatically, so there is no risk of accidentally running up charges before departure or part-way through the outbound flight.

Smart preparation rarely stops at a data plan. Some travellers now put as much thought into securing a hotel upgrade as they do into sorting their connectivity, treating both as part of the same pre-trip checklist rather than something packed the night before.

So, Is eSIM Worth It for British Travellers?

For anyone travelling to the EU on a network offering free or low-cost roaming, the saving on a single short trip may only run to tens of pounds. The broader point is that most British travellers are not on the cheapest tariff, take more than one trip a year, and occasionally end up somewhere, Switzerland, Turkey, the United States, where the daily rate jumps well past £3.50. Add a family of four to that picture, or a fortnight rather than a long weekend, and the gap between a UK network’s roaming fee and an eSIM plan starting from $2.21 stops being loose change.

Given that Ofcom’s own regulatory cap allows for nearly £200 in overage charges for a single family on a single trip, it is not hard to see why eSIM has moved from a niche traveller’s trick to a fairly ordinary part of packing for a holiday, somewhere between checking passports are in date and working out what to do with the pets.
