Liverpool’s search for a new manager to replace the iconic Jurgen Klopp may delay the club’s transfer plans for the new season. Although the unofficial word is that Liverpool has decided on Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim as its new man in charge when Klopp leaves, much depends on agreeing terms with the rising Portuguese managerial star.
While the smart money lies with Amorim taking over the reins from Jurgen Klopp, until he signs on the dotted line, nothing is certain. As such, the most trusted betting sites in the UK continue to offer odds on potential candidates. Amorim is the clear favourite with a price of 7/4, but bookies still see money for the newest candidate, Feyenoord’s Arne Slot (15/2) and long-mentioned Roberto De Zerbi (17/2) of Brighton.
The odds we’ve quoted speak volumes. At such a short price, Ruben Amorim will likely soon publicly take over as Liverpool boss for next season. Until then, the returning Michael Edwards’ job to find transfer targets remains somewhat in limbo.
The new Chief Executive of Football, although still employed as a consultant at sports management business Ludonautics until the beginning of June, has already impacted future movements at Anfield, having hired AFC Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes to take over as Sporting Director at the end of the current season.
It’s no surprise that Edwards is already playing a behind-the-scenes role at Liverpool. Having served under Liverpool’s owners FSG in four different roles between 2012 and 2022, including as Sporting Director for the last six, the ex-Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur Chief Analyst played a huge role in assisting Klopp to transform the club’s fortunes.
Michael Edwards drove the 2017 Mohamed Salah transfer from Roma in 2017 and was instrumental in current club captain Virgil van Dijk’s Anfield arrival. Along with goalkeeper Allison, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, he played a massive role in signing departed club favourites Sadio Mane and Fabinho, among others.
The delay in naming a new Liverpool manager makes Michael Edwards’ task of sealing potential new transfer deals, both inward and outward, that little more difficult. He will want to consult with the new manager, identifying and assessing the type of players he wants in his squad.
There’s also the task of discussing contract renewals or potential moves for existing Liverpool stars, both those needed or deemed surplus to future requirements. By doing so as soon as possible, Edwards can work behind the scenes to plot a way forward for Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title challenge.
