Having a new central heating system installed is one of the most impactful home improvements a property owner can undertake. It affects every room in the house, transforms comfort levels during the colder months, and has a direct bearing on energy costs for years to come. Whether you are installing central heating in a property that has never had it, or replacing an ageing system that has reached the end of its life, understanding what the installation process involves helps you plan effectively and work productively with your installer. Heating companies like Boilerhut provide complete central heating installation services, covering everything from initial design through to final commissioning and testing.

The Initial Survey and System Design

Every central heating installation should begin with a thorough survey of the property. A qualified engineer will assess the size and layout of each room, the current insulation levels, the property construction type, and the hot water demand to design a system that will heat the home effectively and efficiently. This survey informs the specification of the boiler output, the number and size of radiators required in each room, and the pipework layout. Skipping or rushing this stage often leads to systems that underperform in certain rooms or run inefficiently because the components were not matched correctly to the property.

Understanding the Main Components

A central heating system consists of several interconnected components that must all be correctly specified and installed to function as a whole. The boiler generates heat by burning gas or another fuel source. The pump circulates hot water through the pipework to the radiators. The radiators release heat into each room. The thermostat and programmer control when the system operates and at what temperature. The expansion vessel and pressure relief valve manage the pressure within the sealed system. Each component interacts with the others, and a fault or specification error in any one of them affects the performance of the whole installation.

How Long the Installation Takes

The duration of a central heating installation depends on the size of the property and the complexity of the work. A straightforward installation in a two to three bedroom house typically takes between two and four days. Larger properties, those requiring significant underfloor work, or installations where the pipework needs to be run through difficult areas such as solid floors or narrow wall cavities will take longer. A reputable installer will provide a clear timeline before work begins and will keep disruption to occupied areas of the home to a minimum, though some mess and temporary loss of access to certain rooms during the work period is unavoidable.

Choosing Between Radiators and Underfloor Heating

Most central heating installations in UK properties use panel radiators as the heat emitters, as they are cost effective, familiar, and compatible with the majority of boiler systems. Underfloor heating, either wet systems using pipes embedded in the floor screed or electric mat systems, is an alternative that provides more even heat distribution and frees up wall space. Wet underfloor heating works well with condensing boilers and heat pumps as it operates at lower flow temperatures, improving efficiency. It is most practical when installed as part of a renovation where the floor is being lifted, as retrofitting it to a finished floor involves considerable disruption.

The Commissioning Process and What It Covers

Once the physical installation is complete, the system must be commissioned before it is handed over. Commissioning involves filling and pressurising the system, bleeding air from the radiators, setting the pump to the correct speed, balancing the radiators to distribute heat evenly, setting the thermostat and programmer to the correct times and temperatures, and testing all safety devices. The engineer should complete a benchmark commissioning certificate and provide you with copies of all relevant documentation including the Gas Safe certificate for the boiler installation. This documentation is important for warranty purposes and will be requested if you sell the property.

Maintenance After Installation

A new central heating system requires annual servicing to maintain its efficiency and to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid. In addition to the annual service, having a power flush or chemical inhibitor treatment every few years helps keep the system clean and free of sludge buildup, which degrades efficiency and can cause premature component failure. Checking the boiler pressure periodically, bleeding radiators if cold spots develop at the top, and testing the carbon monoxide detector, which should be fitted near the boiler, are straightforward tasks any homeowner can carry out to keep the system performing well between professional visits.
