Results Day Didn’t Go to Plan. What Happens Next

A-level results were published on 13 August this year and GCSE results followed on 20 August. For most families those mornings ended reasonably well. For a substantial minority they did not, and the week afterwards tends to be spent making decisions quickly with very little idea of what the options actually are.

It is worth saying at the start that almost nothing decided in that week is permanent. Grades can be checked, appealed, retaken and worked around, and the number of people who end up where they intended by a different route is far larger than results day coverage suggests.

First, check the grade is right

Before anything else, ask the school or college about a review of marking. Every year a number of grades change on review, and the process starts with a clerical check that the marks were added and recorded correctly, which is quicker and cheaper than a full review.

There are deadlines and there can be fees, usually refunded if the grade changes. Two things matter. A review can move a grade down as well as up, so ask what the mark profile looks like before requesting one. And if a university place depends on the outcome, tell the university a review is under way rather than assuming they will find out.

Priority reviews exist for students whose university place hinges on the result, and the school has to request them quickly. If that applies, raise it the same week rather than waiting.

If it is A-levels and a university place

Clearing is the obvious route and it is far less desperate than its reputation. A significant share of students end up on courses they are happy with through it, including at competitive universities that release places late.

One thing to ignore: any advice mentioning Adjustment. UCAS withdrew it from 2022 entry. If your grades came in higher than expected and you want to look elsewhere, you now use the decline my place option in the UCAS Hub, which releases you into Clearing. That decision cannot be reversed, so secure an alternative before pressing it.

Deferring a year and reapplying with confirmed grades is another option, and applicants holding actual results rather than predictions are frequently in a stronger position than they were the first time.

Retaking one A-level to lift an application is common. It does not require repeating the whole year, and students often do it alongside work or a gap year placement.

If it is GCSE English or maths

This is the most common version of a disappointing results day, and the rules around it are specific.

Students aged sixteen to eighteen who did not achieve a grade 4 in English or maths must continue studying the subject as a condition of their college’s funding. From 2026/27 that means a minimum of 100 hours of teaching a year in each subject for full-time students. Anyone at grade 3 studies towards a GCSE, while those at grade 2 or below may take Functional Skills level 2 instead.

There is a November resit series for English and maths specifically, with results in January, which is much sooner than waiting for the following summer.

It is also worth keeping the numbers in proportion. Almost half a million GCSE entries this summer came from students in year 12 or above, and in maths more than one in four entries came from someone who had already left year 11. Retaking is not an unusual outcome. It is one of the most common experiences in the English exam system.

If university was never really the plan

A disappointing set of A-level or BTEC results sometimes exposes that the destination was chosen by momentum rather than intention. Several routes are worth knowing about before defaulting to Clearing.

Degree apprenticeships combine paid employment with a degree funded by the employer, and competition for them is genuinely stiff, which is a reasonable signal about their value. Higher apprenticeships at levels 4 and 5 lead to technical qualifications without the degree. T Levels are two-year technical qualifications broadly equivalent to three A-levels, with a substantial industry placement built in.

Most of these still ask for GCSE English and maths at grade 4, which loops back to the earlier point. If that is the missing piece, fixing it opens more doors than another year of A-levels would.

If school has stopped working

For some families, a bad results day is the point at which a longer running problem becomes impossible to ignore. That conversation is happening more often than it used to. In autumn 2025, 126,000 children in England were in elective home education, up from 111,700 a year earlier, and the most commonly reported reason was mental health.

Home education through GCSEs is entirely workable and considerably more structured than people assume from the outside. Students study specifications, sit the same papers and receive the same certificates. What changes is that the family takes on the administration, particularly finding an exam centre that accepts external candidates, which needs arranging around six months ahead.

It is not a decision to make in the week after results day. It is a decision worth researching properly over a term, and there are established organisations, including charities that have been doing this since the 1960s, that support families through it.

If you left school years ago

Adults come to this from a different direction, usually a job application that asked for a qualification they do not hold. If you are nineteen or over in England without a grade 4 in English or maths, government funding may cover you to study those subjects free at a further education college. If attendance around work is impossible, providers such as CloudLearn offer the same qualifications studied independently, with exam entry arranged for you.

One encouraging figure for anyone in that position. In summer 2025, candidates aged twenty and over passed GCSE maths at 34.0% against 15.3% for those aged seventeen to nineteen, and the same pattern held in English. The frequently quoted resit pass rates are mostly describing teenagers who are required to be there.

Where to get advice that is not trying to sell you something

The National Careers Service offers free guidance by phone and webchat to anyone in England aged thirteen and over, including on qualifications and funding entitlements. Awarding bodies publish their own guidance on reviews of marking, appeals and replacement certificates, and their exams teams answer questions from the public.

Local further education colleges will talk to prospective students without an application, and are usually the fastest way to find out what is funded and what is not in your area. None of these cost anything, and all of them are more reliable than a comment thread.

The week itself

Whatever the decision turns out to be, very little of it has to be made in the first forty-eight hours. Clearing runs for weeks. Review deadlines are days rather than hours. The November series exists. Colleges take students in September and later.

The one thing worth doing immediately is talking to the school or college, because they have the mark information, they can request reviews and they have seen this a great many times before.
