Monzo Business: The Smart Banking Solution for Payments

Running a business means dealing with payments constantly such as supplier invoices, client transfers, card spending, VAT set-asides and payroll. Traditional banks often make this harder than it needs to be, with slow transfers, opaque fees and apps that feel like they were designed a decade ago.

Monzo Business has built its reputation on solving exactly that. Rather than bolting a business product onto legacy infrastructure, it offers a mobile-first current account with a full UK banking licence behind it. For sole traders and small limited companies that mainly bank online, it has become one of the most credible alternatives to the high street.

Personal Values Can Build Confidence, Says Certain Growth Solutions Founder Joey Chandler

This guide breaks down what Monzo Business actually offers, how its plans compare, where it works well for business payments, and where its limits sit.

What Is Monzo Business?

Monzo Business is a UK business current account from Monzo Bank Limited, a fully licensed bank authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and PRA. That distinction matters more than most people realise: because Monzo holds its own banking licence rather than operating as an e-money institution, eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

The account is available to UK-based sole traders and directors of UK limited companies. All directors and persons with significant control must be UK residents, which rules out businesses with overseas directors or non-UK incorporation.

Everything happens in the app: opening the account, issuing cards, moving money between pots, sending payments and chatting to support. There are no branches and no relationship managers, which is either the main appeal or the main drawback depending on how you like to work.

Why Monzo Business Works for Business Payments

1. Free UK Transfers as Standard

Domestic transfers via Faster Payments are included on every plan at no cost, and they typically land within seconds. Direct Debits and standing orders are supported as standard, so recurring supplier payments and subscriptions run without manual intervention.

Card spending in the UK carries no additional fee, and Monzo doesn’t apply a markup to exchange rates on card purchases abroad.

2. Pots That Make Cash Flow Visible

Pots are the feature most Monzo Business customers cite first. They function as named sub-accounts inside your main balance: one for VAT, one for corporation tax, one for payroll, one for a hardware fund. Moving money in and out is instant and free, however often you do it.

On the Pro plan, Tax Pots go a step further by automatically setting aside a percentage of every incoming payment. For sole traders facing a self-assessment bill, this quietly removes the single most common cash flow mistake in small business.

3. Invoicing and Accounting Integrations

Monzo Business Pro includes built-in invoicing, so you can create, send and track invoices without leaving the app, and reconcile them against incoming payments automatically.

It also connects directly to the major accounting platforms likes Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage. Once linked, transactions sync automatically, which eliminates manual CSV exports and the reconciliation backlog that tends to build up before every deadline. All plans support Making Tax Digital requirements, which became mandatory for a wider group of businesses in April 2026.

4. Multi-User Access, Expense Cards and Approvals

Once you have staff, single-user banking becomes a bottleneck. The Team plan adds access for up to 15 people, along with expense cards, spending controls, bulk payments and payment approvals.

This is the tier that lets you give a bookkeeper or operations manager appropriate access without handing over your own login. Bulk payments also make payroll runs and multi-supplier settlements considerably faster than sending transfers one at a time.

Multiple cards also change the reporting picture. Once five or ten people are spending, the useful question stops being “what did we spend?” and becomes “who spent it, on what, and is that trending up?” Custom categories help, but visual analysis answers it faster which is why operations managers often pick up a Tableau kursus to build spend-by-cardholder and spend-by-category views that a founder can scan in seconds rather than reading down a transaction list.

Using Your Payment Data for Cash Flow Forecasting

A business account is not only a place to move money. Monzo Business supports automatic exports and custom transaction categories on Pro, which means your payment history can flow into whatever forecasting model you prefer rather than staying locked inside a banking app.

This is where a lot of small businesses leave value on the table. A year of exported transactions reveals which clients consistently pay late, how supplier costs drift month to month, and how seasonal your revenue really is.

The moment the forecast needs rebuilding by hand every month, it stops being maintained. Finance teams typically move the model into Microsoft’s reporting stack at that point, and working through a Power BI certificering is a practical route to a forecast that refreshes from your exported bank data automatically, turning a bank statement from a compliance document into a forward-looking planning tool.

Where Monzo Business Has Limits

No account suits everyone, and being clear about the constraints is more useful than a sales pitch:

  • Eligibility is strict. UK residency is required for all directors and persons of significant control. Overseas-incorporated companies cannot apply.

  • Cash handling is awkward. Paying in cash goes through PayPoint and carries a fee per deposit, so cash-heavy retail and hospitality businesses will find it inconvenient.

  • International payments are not the strong point. Receiving funds in a non-GBP currency triggers a conversion charge, and outbound international transfers carry both fixed and variable fees. Businesses trading heavily in foreign currency should compare dedicated FX providers.

  • Support is app-first. In-app chat is the primary channel, and phone support is limited to paid tiers. If you want a named contact or branch access, this isn’t the right fit.

  • Key features sit behind paid plans. Invoicing, integrations and Tax Pots all require Pro or above.

How to Open A Monzo Business Account

Opening an account happens entirely in the Monzo app. You’ll need proof of identity, your business details and information about directors and persons with significant control.

Verification is usually quick for straightforward sole trader applications, though limited companies with multiple directors can take longer. Once approved, connect your accounting software, set up pots for tax and payroll, and order cards for anyone who needs them.

Final Thoughts

Monzo Business earns its reputation on the fundamentals that instant free UK transfers, pots that make tax and cash flow genuinely manageable, and integrations that remove hours of monthly admin. Backed by a full banking licence and FSCS protection, it offers a level of security that many app-based competitors operating as e-money firms cannot match.

It isn’t the right answer for cash-heavy operations, businesses with overseas directors, or companies that need serious multi-currency capability. But for a UK sole trader or small limited company that wants payments handled cleanly from a phone. It remains one of the strongest options available.

How Many Monzo Business Accounts Can I Have?

Monzo allows one business account per business entity, so a sole trader is limited to a single account under their trading identity. If you run more than one registered company, each company can hold its own Monzo Business account, and they’ll appear separately in the same app.

Is Monzo Business Account Free?

The Lite plan is genuinely free, with no monthly fee, no minimum turnover and no minimum balance. It includes the current account, a debit card, free UK transfers, pots and FSCS protection.

The paid tiers cost extra: Pro is around £9 per month with the first month free, and Team starts at around £25 per month. Some transaction charges apply on every plan regardless of tier, including a fee for cash deposits made through PayPoint and conversion charges on payments received in a currency other than sterling. For a UK sole trader paying suppliers domestically, though, Lite really does cost nothing to run.

What Do I Need to Set Up a Monzo Business Account?

You’ll need proof of identity plus a UK address, and the whole process runs through the app rather than a paper form.

Straightforward sole trader applications are often approved quickly; limited companies with several directors typically take longer.

Is Monzo Business Pro Worth the Monthly Fee?

It depends on your admin load. If you invoice clients regularly or want automatic accounting sync, the time saved usually outweighs the cost. If you send a handful of payments a month and reconcile manually, Lite is sufficient.
