Driving in Spain: What UK Visitors Need to Know Before Renting a Car

Driving in Spain: What UK Visitors Need to Know Before Renting a Car

Spain is one of Europe’s best countries for a road trip. A car makes it easier to reach quiet beaches, mountain villages, national parks and smaller coastal towns that are less convenient by train or bus. It can also save time for families, travellers carrying luggage and anyone planning to combine several destinations in one holiday.

Before booking, though, it is worth understanding the local driving rules, rental requirements and common costs. A little preparation can help you avoid expensive surprises at the collection desk and make the journey far more relaxed.

Do UK visitors need an International Driving Permit?

For most short tourist visits, a full and valid UK photocard driving licence is normally accepted when renting and driving a car in Spain. However, individual rental suppliers can apply their own conditions, particularly for certain vehicle categories or drivers with non-standard licences.

Take the original licence, not a photocopy. You will also usually need:

  • A passport or valid ID document
  • A payment card in the main driver’s name
  • Your rental booking confirmation
  • Your rental company’s contact details and collection instructions

Check the supplier’s exact terms before travel, especially if your licence is damaged, close to expiry, issued outside the UK or you plan to add another driver.

Choose the right pickup point

Airport collection is often the simplest option if you are flying into Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Madrid or Tenerife. It means you can begin the journey immediately rather than arranging a transfer to a city office.

That said, an airport is not always the cheapest pickup point. Compare locations for your dates, especially in peak summer weeks. A city branch can sometimes offer a lower base rate, while an airport pickup may be more convenient after a late arrival or when travelling with children.

For a useful starting point, travellers can compare car rental options in Spain by location, vehicle type, deposit requirement, insurance options and mileage policy before booking.

Manual or automatic?

Manual cars are still common in Spain, and they are usually less expensive than automatics. If you are comfortable driving a manual vehicle, you will normally find more choice and better availability.

If you need an automatic, book early. Demand is high during school holidays, particularly in popular destinations such as Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canary Islands. Do not assume a low-priced listing includes an automatic gearbox: always confirm the transmission in the booking details.

A small hatchback works well for city breaks and couples travelling light. Families or travellers planning a longer route may prefer an estate car, crossover or SUV with room for luggage. For steep inland roads and mountain areas, make sure the vehicle has enough power for your route.

Driving rules to know

Spain drives on the right. This is the main adjustment for UK visitors, especially at roundabouts, junctions and when leaving a car park.

A few essentials are worth remembering:

  • Wear a seat belt at all times.
  • Do not use a handheld mobile phone while driving.
  • Follow local speed signs rather than relying only on general limits.
  • Give priority carefully at roundabouts and junctions.
  • Keep your attention on lane position after turning or joining a motorway.
  • Never drink and drive; Spain enforces drink-driving laws strictly.

Speed limits vary by road type and may change frequently, especially when entering towns or roadworks. In urban areas, limits are often 30 km/h or 50 km/h; motorway limits are commonly higher. Cameras are widespread, so it is safer to follow posted signs throughout the route.

Tolls, motorways and fuel

Spain has both toll and toll-free motorways. Roads marked AP are generally autopistas and may charge a toll, while many roads marked A are autovías and are usually free. In some areas, a toll road can save considerable time, but a free alternative is often available.

Before setting off on a long journey, check whether your navigation route includes tolls. This matters particularly on routes along parts of the Mediterranean coast and between major cities.

Most rental firms use a full-to-full fuel policy: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. This is generally the clearest and fairest option. Keep your final fuel receipt in case the rental company asks for proof that you refuelled close to the return point.

Parking in Spanish cities

Parking is often the biggest practical challenge in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Seville and other popular cities. Central streets can be narrow, underground car parks may have tight ramps, and free parking is limited.

Watch kerb and bay colours carefully:

  • Blue zones are commonly paid short-stay parking.
  • Green zones are often restricted or intended mainly for residents.
  • Yellow lines and marked restricted areas should be avoided.
  • Hotel parking or a pre-booked garage can be worth the extra cost in city centres.

If your holiday is mainly based in central Barcelona or Madrid, it may be better to rent a car only for day trips rather than for the entire stay. Public transport is often more convenient within the city, while a car adds value once you head to places such as Girona, Sitges, Montserrat, Ronda, Nerja or smaller coastal resorts.

Insurance, excess and deposit

The headline rental price is only one part of the decision. Before booking, check the insurance and payment conditions closely.

Most rentals include basic cover, often with an excess. This means you may remain responsible for part of the cost if the vehicle is damaged or stolen. Suppliers can also place a refundable security deposit on the main driver’s payment card.

Look at these points before confirming:

  • The deposit amount and payment card requirements
  • Insurance excess and optional excess-reduction cover
  • Whether tyres, glass, mirrors and underbody damage are excluded
  • Mileage limits or unlimited mileage
  • Additional-driver fees
  • Cross-border driving rules, if you plan to enter Portugal, France or Andorra
  • The fuel policy and late-return procedure

At collection, inspect the car carefully. Take time-stamped photos or video of the bodywork, wheels, windscreen and interior. Make sure pre-existing marks are recorded on the rental agreement before you leave the car park.

Low-emission zones

Several Spanish cities use low-emission zones that restrict vehicle access in central areas. Madrid and Barcelona are particularly important examples. Rules can apply to residents, visitors, certain vehicle emissions categories and access to specific streets or districts.

Rental cars are usually supplied with the documentation or environmental classification needed for normal permitted use, but you should still confirm the rules if you intend to drive into a city centre. Your hotel may also be able to advise on access routes and parking.

Final checklist

A road trip in Spain is straightforward when you prepare the essentials in advance:

  • Book early if you need an automatic car or travel in summer.
  • Use a card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit.
  • Compare total conditions, not only the daily rental price.
  • Check the fuel, mileage, insurance and deposit policies.
  • Photograph the car at collection and return.
  • Plan parking before entering busy city centres.
  • Follow signs for speed limits, tolls and low-emission zones.

With the right vehicle and a clear understanding of the rental terms, driving in Spain can turn a standard holiday into a much more flexible trip — from coastal villages and vineyard routes to mountain roads and island viewpoints.
