Santa Clause Rally Claims Checked Against Linea Prime Charts

The Santa Clause Rally is one of those market sayings that arrives every December with a confident tone and very little detail. The usual wording points to the last five trading days of the year and the first two of the next, and says prices tend to lift across that stretch. I have never seen the saying come with a date range I could load onto a chart, which is what made me want to test it properly.

I build school timetables for a living, so a claim that rests on a calendar window gets my attention for the wrong reasons. The start of the window, the sessions that run short and the holidays that fall inside it are all things I would check before believing a word. For this Linea Prime review I used the browser platform on a laptop, then on a phone browser, and treated the saying as something to measure rather than repeat.

Fixing the Window Before Opening a Chart

The saying names seven sessions, and the first job was to turn it into seven dated candles. I counted back from the final trading day of the year, not from 31 December, because the last session depends on where the weekend falls. Counting calendar days would have pulled in a Saturday and a Sunday with no candles at all, and the window would have quietly shrunk.

Then came the holidays. Several venues close for Christmas Day and the day after, and some shorten the session on the days beside them. I wrote the closures for each year into a table, one row per year, with a column for early closes. That table took longer than the chart work, and I would not skip it. A window that contains a closed day is a different window from one that contains seven full sessions, and the saying makes no mention of the difference.

I also chose what to measure before looking. My rule was simple: the close of the session before the window opened, against the close of the seventh session. Choosing the measure afterwards would have let me pick whichever pair of candles flattered the saying.

Marking the Window on a Linea Prime Daily Chart

The daily interval was the obvious setting, so I opened an index and a large share on a daily chart and stretched the range back as far as the history allowed. How far that went differed by instrument, which is worth checking before planning a multi year comparison, since a short history cannot support a seasonal pattern.

I used the vertical line tool from the chart drawing menu to mark the session before each window and the seventh session inside it. With two lines per year the window was visible at a glance, and the candles between the lines could be read against those before and after. I then stepped back one December at a time and repeated the marks.

The price source mattered here. A daily close is the venue’s closing print for that session, and on a shortened day it can arrive earlier than usual. I read each closing value from the crosshair readout rather than judging by eye, because a candle that looks tall after a change of vertical zoom can be a small move on an honest scale. A few Decembers looked far more dramatic after I squeezed the axis, which was a useful reminder that the presentation was shaping my impression.

Thin Sessions and What They Do to the Candles

Holiday sessions are thin, and a thin market behaves differently from a busy one. Fewer participants means a single large order can move the price further, and the gap between buy and sell prices can widen. On the intraday charts the middle of the window looked slower, with long quiet stretches broken by a handful of prints. A daily close reached on that kind of trading is a less settled number than one reached on an ordinary Tuesday in October.

That matters for the saying. If a rise across the window came mostly from two or three thin sessions, it says less about a broad seasonal mood than a rise spread evenly across seven days. I looked at the individual daily candles, counting how many closed higher than they opened, and wrote that count beside the total move. Two years with similar totals could have quite different shapes underneath. I record this as an observation about reading charts, not as a statistic, because my sample was a handful of Decembers on two instruments.

Order Lifetimes and Stops Around a Holiday Calendar

Reading a calendar claim is one thing, and acting on it is another. I sent no orders for this test, but I went through the order ticket with the window in mind. Where an instrument offers a choice of how long an order stays alive, that field deserves attention before a holiday. A limit order left to last across several sessions can sit through a closure and then meet the first print after the break, which may be well away from the price I had in mind.

Stops need the same care. In a thin market a stop can be triggered by a brief move and fill at a worse level than the one entered, since the price may jump across a gap. A position sized for an ordinary session can also be too large for a quiet one. The sensible response was a smaller size, a stated end date and a price alert at a distance I chose in advance, all set before the window began. An alert let me leave the screen, which suited a week when I wanted to be elsewhere.

Following the Window From a Phone Browser

The week itself was spent mostly away from a desk, so I opened the platform in my phone’s browser to follow the window. The chart drew without trouble, the daily candles were readable in portrait, and turning the phone sideways gave the vertical lines enough room to be seen. Drawing precise marks with a fingertip was fiddly, so I did the marking on the laptop and used the phone to check the result. Reading values from the crosshair worked on the phone too, though the laptop made it quicker.

I mention it because a seasonal window is the kind of idea people check in odd moments, and a browser that shows the same chart on a small screen removes one excuse for guessing from memory.

A Calendar Idea Checked Against Its Own Dates

Across the Decembers I could load, the window did not behave as one repeating pattern. Some years rose across the seven sessions, some were flat, and the daily shapes underneath varied more than the totals did. The saying survived as a loose tendency I could describe and failed as a rule I would size an order around. Dates, closures and short sessions did more to shape what I saw than any mood of the season.

My Linea Prime review notes ended up as a checklist for any calendar claim: count sessions rather than days, write down closures, fix the measure beforehand, read closes from the crosshair and shrink the size when the market is thin. The next Linea Prime review I write on a seasonal idea will start with the table of closures, because everything else depends on it.

The charts were enough to test the saying, and the result was modest: a window worth knowing about, and a poor reason on its own to place an order.
