Why the World’s Most Powerful Leaders Still Need to Train for the Camera

In an era where a single ill-judged interview can move markets or destabilize public trust, executive communication has become a strategic discipline — not a soft skill. Yet most senior leaders step in front of the camera with no structured preparation.

There is a particular kind of silence that falls in a studio when a senior executive is asked a question they were not prepared for. The hesitation lasts perhaps two seconds. But two seconds of silence in a live television interview can define a career. It can move a share price. In the hands of a skilled journalist, it becomes the headline.

This is not an abstract risk. It is the routine reality for any leader whose words carry public consequence — and in today’s media environment, that category is far broader than it once was. The proliferation of formats, the speed of social amplification, and the increasing expectation that leaders speak not just on behalf of their organizations but on the defining issues of their time mean that the margin for unpreparedness has narrowed to almost nothing.

Reputation as a balance sheet item

There is a well-documented relationship between a CEO’s public reputation and the market value of the organization they lead. Multiple studies over the past decade have placed leadership reputation as a substantial share of overall company value — a finding that has only grown more relevant as media coverage of executive behavior has intensified. Yet the gap between how leaders perceive their own communication effectiveness and how audiences actually receive them remains one of the more consistent findings in organizational research. Executives, as a group, tend to overestimate the clarity and impact of their public communication. Their audiences, just as consistently, report otherwise.

That gap does not close on its own. And in the current environment, it is increasingly costly. Consumer research has repeatedly demonstrated that audiences form opinions about companies through the public behavior of the people who lead them. Audiences are perceptive. They register not just what a leader says, but how they say it — and what that reveals about the organization behind them. Reputation is built and eroded in those moments, and the responsibility for managing them has long since outgrown the communications function. It belongs in the boardroom conversation alongside risk, governance, and strategy.

The question is not whether your senior leaders will face high-stakes public scrutiny. It is whether they will be ready for it when they do.

The stakes are higher in emerging and high-growth markets

Across the Middle East and Africa, the pressure on senior leaders is particularly intense. Executives and ministers operating in these markets are not simply company representatives. They are frequently architects of national vision — figures whose words on investment outlook, trade policy, or economic trajectory are parsed by markets and governments simultaneously.

It is precisely this environment that has driven the growth of specialized executive communication training in the region. Dubai’s rise as a base for multinational headquarters, sovereign capital, and regional diplomatic activity has created a particular kind of demand — leaders who must be fluent in global media conventions while operating in one of the world’s most complex stakeholder environments. Media training in Dubai has grown to meet that need. The leaders operating from and through Dubai are expected to perform credibly across international media formats while navigating the specific sensitivities of a complex regional context. That combination demands a different kind of preparation.

What is notable is that the demand is not driven by weakness. The executives and ministers who seek structured training are often the most experienced in their fields. What they recognize — and what their peers who do not seek training sometimes do not — is that public communication under pressure is a distinct skill set, one that degrades without practice and sharpens with it.

What rigorous preparation actually involves

The misconception about media training is that it teaches leaders to evade questions. In practice, it teaches something considerably more sophisticated: how to maintain control of a narrative without ever appearing evasive.

Message discipline is the foundation. Effective communicators know their three core points before an interview begins, and they are trained to return to those points regardless of how a question is framed. Bridging — the technique of acknowledging a line of questioning and redirecting to a key message — is a learnable skill that becomes instinctive only through repetition.

Then there is the non-verbal dimension. Communication is only partly a verbal exercise. Audiences form their judgments of a speaker through a constellation of signals — stillness under pressure, the quality of eye contact, the pace at which words arrive — and those judgments tend to form faster, and stick harder, than the content itself. The credibility an executive carries into a room can leave through the door before they have finished their first answer. Composure, vocal steadiness, and physical presence are not qualities a leader either has or does not have. They are skills — and like all skills, they respond to deliberate practice.

Well-designed programs reserve significant time for pressure testing. Live scenarios with experienced interviewers, lines of questioning that arrive from unexpected angles, sustained discomfort that mirrors what a real crisis interview actually feels like. The point is not to anticipate every eventuality. It is to ensure that when the eventuality arrives, the leader in front of the camera has been there before.

A whole-organization consideration

It is a common error to treat the preparation for executive communication as a concern solely for the person at the top. In practice, a company’s public reputation is shaped by every spokesperson who speaks on its behalf — from board members and senior executives to regional heads and technical leads who are increasingly called upon to appear in specialist media, on podcasts, and at major industry gatherings.

Inconsistency in messaging across an organization is not simply a communications problem. It is a governance problem. When spokespeople at different levels convey subtly different narratives, audiences — including investors, regulators, and the journalists who brief both — notice the discrepancy. The credibility cost compounds.

Organizations that invest in building communication capability across leadership tiers develop a coherent, resilient public voice. When a crisis does arrive — and in any organization of scale, it will — that coherence is the difference between a controlled response and a damaging one. It is a striking feature of corporate life that crisis communications planning, despite its proven value, remains inconsistently adopted. Many organizations discover the gap in their preparation only when they need it most.

The multi-platform executive

The media environment in which today’s leaders operate bears little resemblance to that navigated by their predecessors. Television and print remain important. But the senior leader who cannot hold their own in a long-form podcast conversation, manage their professional presence on LinkedIn, or speak with authority and warmth at a major industry panel is operating at a competitive disadvantage that will compound over time.

Each format has its own rhythms, rules, and risks. Print, broadcast, podcast, panel — each format rewards a different kind of performance, and penalizes the same one applied in the wrong setting. Executives who rely on a single register, however polished, will eventually find themselves in a format that exposes it. Adaptability across media is not an advanced skill. It is the starting point.

Preparation is not a sign of weakness

There persists in some leadership cultures a residual reluctance to invest in structured communication preparation—a sense that needing training is somehow to admit inadequacy. The inverse is true, and the analogy is straightforward. The athletes who compete at the highest levels do not enter the arena without preparation. The surgeons who perform the most complex procedures have practiced their craft in simulation long before they are tested under pressure.

Senior leaders who speak for their organizations, industries, and nations deserve the same level of deliberate preparation. The media landscape will not become more forgiving. The audience watching will not become less attentive. And the journalists asking the difficult questions will not become less skilled at asking them.

The camera is already running. The question is whether the leader standing in front of it has done the work to be ready.
