How UK Holidaymakers Can Stay Connected During a Trip to Spain

The argument started over a restaurant.

Not the restaurant itself — finding it, in the backstreets of Malaga’s historic centre, had taken forty minutes that nobody was particularly enjoying. The argument was about whose phone was showing the correct route, which turned out to be a moot point because neither phone had working data at that moment, and the offline maps both of us had downloaded before leaving the UK covered the city centre but not the specific neighbourhood we were standing in.

AI Image Creation Is Easier Than Ever – So Why Is It Still So Frustrating?

September 1, 2026

We found the restaurant eventually. The food was excellent. The forty minutes of increasingly tense navigation through Malaga’s back streets was less so.

Spain is the most popular overseas destination for UK holidaymakers. More than 17 million British visitors travel there every year. Most of them use their phones throughout — for navigation, for translation, for booking, for keeping in touch with family at home. And a significant number of them discover, at some point during the trip, that their connectivity is either not working, costing more than expected, or both.

What Changed for UK Travellers After Brexit

Before Brexit, EU roaming regulations meant that UK travellers in Spain paid roughly the same rates for mobile data as they did at home. That protection largely fell away when the UK left the European Union.

The picture has become more complicated since then. Some UK networks have maintained reasonable European roaming arrangements. Others have reintroduced daily charges ranging from £2 to £10 per day in Spain. Others have capped the data available on roaming plans at levels that feel adequate until a two-week holiday reveals how much data navigation, booking, and daily use actually requires.

Spain is a member of the European Union, which provides some protections for EU visitors. For UK visitors, those protections no longer apply automatically. What applies instead is whatever specific arrangement your UK network has chosen to offer — which varies significantly between carriers and requires checking specifically rather than assuming.

Why Spain Specifically Rewards Being Connected

Before getting to solutions, it is worth understanding what connectivity actually enables on a Spain holiday — because the answer explains why getting it right matters.

Navigation in Spanish cities is genuinely complex. Malaga’s historic centre, Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, Seville’s Barrio de Santa Cruz, Granada’s Albaicín — these are medieval street networks designed without any consideration for tourist navigation. They are beautiful, atmospheric, and consistently disorienting without GPS. The experience of walking through them with working navigation is entirely different from the experience of walking through them while arguing about which direction the offline map is pointing.

Booking requires live connectivity. Popular restaurants in Barcelona and Madrid fill quickly, particularly in summer. Excursion bookings from coastal resorts — boat trips, day trips to Granada from the Costa del Sol, flamenco shows in Seville — often require advance booking through apps or websites. Doing this while travelling, on the day or the day before, requires working data.

The Canary Islands add complexity. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura are Spanish territory and among the most popular winter sun destinations for UK travellers. Some UK network roaming arrangements that cover mainland Spain handle the Canary Islands separately — worth specifically verifying before travel if the Canaries are on the itinerary.

The Three Options Available to UK Holidaymakers

Staying on your UK network’s roaming

For UK travellers whose network includes Spain at a reasonable daily rate, roaming remains the most convenient option. The important step is verification before departure — checking the specific daily rate and data cap that applies to Spain on your specific plan, not the general marketing language about European roaming.

EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, and most UK networks have different arrangements for Spain, and those arrangements have changed since Brexit. What was included freely may now carry a daily charge. What carries a daily charge may cap data at a level that runs out mid-holiday.

For trips of four or five days with light phone use, roaming can be entirely adequate if the rates are reasonable. For two-week summer holidays using phones heavily for navigation, booking, and daily communication, the daily charges across fourteen days add up into a figure that was not in the holiday budget.

Buying a local Spanish SIM

Available at Spanish airports and from carrier stores in cities. Local Spanish carriers — Movistar, Orange, and Vodafone Spain — offer excellent data rates at a fraction of what UK networks charge for the same connection.

The practical considerations for UK holidaymakers: registration requires a passport. Your UK SIM comes out of your phone, which means your UK number goes dark for the duration. Calls from home, WhatsApp messages to your regular UK number, two-factor authentication from UK banking apps — all require your UK number and become inaccessible while the local SIM is in the device.

For UK travellers spending extended time in Spain — a month or more — the economics of a local SIM justify the setup. For a standard two-week summer holiday, the decision of whether to lose your UK number for a fortnight in exchange for cheaper data is a personal one worth making consciously rather than by default.

Travel eSIM

This is the approach that most UK travellers who sort their Spain connectivity properly now use.

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into modern smartphones. You purchase a Spain data plan before you travel, install it at home before you fly, and your phone connects to local Spanish networks the moment you land. Your UK SIM stays in your phone throughout — your UK number active, calls from home coming through normally, WhatsApp on your regular number working as it does at home. The eSIM handles data as a completely separate line at local Spanish rates.

Setup takes approximately five minutes at home on a reliable WiFi connection. When you land at Malaga, Palma, Alicante, or any other Spanish airport, your data is already working before you leave the terminal.

After the Malaga navigation incident, we now install a Spain eSIM before every holiday that includes significant time in the country. The cost compared to daily UK network roaming rates is significantly lower. The UK number stays active. Neither problem from that Malaga evening has occurred since.

I use easySim for Spain trips. The dual Movistar and Vodafone Spain network access means the phone automatically connects to whichever of the two provides the strongest signal at any location — central Barcelona, the rural roads of Andalusia, the resort areas of the Costa del Sol, or the Canary Islands. For current plan options and pricing in pounds, the travel eSIM for Spain page has everything clearly laid out.

What Spain eSIM Plans Cost — Compared to UK Roaming

PlanValidityPrice
1GB7 days£2.99
3GB15 days£5.99
5GB30 days£7.99
10GB30 days£12.99
20GB30 days£17.99
50GB30 days£36.99

The comparison with UK roaming rates is direct.

For a two-week Spain holiday, a UK network charging £5 per day in Spain costs £70 in roaming charges. The 10GB Spain eSIM plan at £12.99 covers most moderate users for two weeks with room to spare — a saving of £57 on a single trip for one person.

For a family of four where two adults have eSIM-compatible phones, the combined saving across two plans compared to daily roaming is over £100 on a two-week holiday.

All plans include full hotspot support with no daily cap restrictions. Sharing from one plan with a travel companion whose phone is not eSIM compatible is unrestricted — one plan shared between two moderate users on a ten-day trip is often sufficient.

Network Coverage Across Spain

easySim’s Spain eSIM connects to both Movistar and Vodafone Spain, with automatic network selection for the strongest available signal.

Barcelona: Excellent 4G throughout the city. 5G available in central areas. Gothic Quarter, Eixample, Barceloneta, and the areas around Camp Nou all maintain strong signal.

Madrid: Comprehensive coverage including 5G in major commercial and tourist areas. The centre, Retiro Park, and the airport corridor all covered.

Andalusia — Malaga, Seville, Granada, Cordoba: Solid 4G throughout cities and coastal areas. Rural roads between cities on longer driving itineraries can get patchy — worth downloading offline maps before multi-city driving days.

Costa del Sol and Costa Brava: Comprehensive resort area coverage. Beach zones maintain strong signal throughout the summer season.

Canary Islands — Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura: All covered under the Spain plan. Both Movistar and Vodafone Spain provide coverage across the main islands. Inter-island ferries lose signal at sea but reconnect on arrival.

Balearic Islands — Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca: Covered. Main resort and town areas maintain strong 4G. Remote rural areas can be patchy — standard for island coverage.

Setting Up Before You Fly

Check eSIM compatibility: Dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID value appears, your device supports eSIM. Most iPhones from XS onwards (2018) and Android flagship devices from 2019 qualify.

Check your phone is unlocked: UK phones purchased on contract may be carrier-locked. iPhone: Settings → General → About → Network Provider Lock → “No SIM restrictions” confirms you are good. Contact your carrier if locked.

Purchase and install before departure: Buy your plan and install via QR code or click-to-install at home on reliable WiFi. Takes five minutes. Label it “Spain” in settings.

Disable UK SIM roaming before landing: Settings → Mobile Service → your UK SIM → Data Roaming: off. Prevents background apps generating UK roaming charges on arrival.

Activate on landing: Select Spain eSIM as mobile data, enable data roaming. Phone connects to Movistar or Vodafone Spain automatically.

For a full comparison of travel eSIM options for Spain and other international destinations — covering what to look for in plan structures, coverage lists, and which options suit different trip types — the guide to choosing a travel eSIM for trips abroad covers everything before purchase.

The Malaga Postscript

We went back to Malaga the following summer. Same city, better preparation.

Spain eSIM installed before we left home. Data working on landing at AGP. Navigation open before we reached the taxi rank.

The restaurant was in Malaga’s historic centre again — a different one this time, recommended by someone at the hotel. We found it in about four minutes. No argument. No offline map disagreement. No forty minutes in the back streets.

The food was excellent. So was the evening.

Spain is one of the best holiday destinations available to UK travellers. Sort the connectivity before you fly and spend the time you would otherwise spend managing around data problems actually enjoying it.
