The First Five Things Every New UK Business Should Set Up Online

Incorporating a company is the easy part. What trips up most new owners is the scramble that follows: deciding what to set up online, in what order, before customers start looking for them. There’s no single right answer, but there is a sensible sequence, and getting it backwards tends to mean redoing work later, usually at a worse time than the first attempt.

Start with the domain, not the website

The domain name is the foundation everything else sits on: the website address, the business email, and often the first thing a potential customer checks before deciding whether a company is real. Securing it early, even before the website itself is built, protects the name and stops a competitor or a domain trader getting there first. For UK-facing businesses, a co.uk domain tends to read as local in a way a generic one does not, which matters more than founders often expect when a stranger is deciding whether to trust an unfamiliar company online. It’s worth registering the buy co.uk domain before committing to anything else, since hosting, email and site tools all key off it. Renewal terms and ownership details are worth checking at the same time, since a domain that lapses by accident a year later can hand the name straight to whoever registers it next.

A business email avoids an awkward moment later

A business email on the company’s own domain, rather than a free webmail account, avoids the moment a payment processor or a supplier flags a personal-looking address during onboarding, which happens more often than founders expect. It also keeps business correspondence separate from personal messages once invoices and customer queries start arriving daily. This step depends entirely on the domain already being secured, which is why it comes second rather than first. Setting up two or three addresses at this stage, one for general enquiries and one for invoicing, tends to save a reorganisation later once the business has grown past a single inbox.

The website needs to exist before anything else goes live

A social profile with no working website behind it sends a curious visitor precisely nowhere, which is the most common reason founders end up rebuilding their online presence twice. The website doesn’t need to be finished to be useful; it needs to be live, accurate, and easy to find quickly. This is also where hosting choices start to matter. Reliable hosting keeps the site fast and available, and for many small UK businesses a WordPress setup paired with the right hosting is the practical middle ground between a barebones page builder and a custom build. Poor hosting shows up fastest on mobile, where a slow-loading website loses a visitor before the homepage finishes rendering, and most visitors now arrive on a phone rather than a desktop screen. Choosing hosting that scales without a manual upgrade later avoids a second migration once traffic picks up.

Social profiles come after the domain and website, not before

It’s tempting to open a business social account first, since it’s free and immediate, but a profile without a website behind it has nowhere to send the people it reaches. Once the domain and hosting are settled, social accounts earn their place. WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram remain the platforms with the widest daily reach among UK adults, with WhatsApp used daily by three-quarters of the online population according to Ofcom’s 2025 findings, so a presence there reaches customers who are already checking in daily rather than occasionally. Linking every profile back to the website, rather than to a generic landing page, keeps the domain doing the work it was set up to do in the first place.

Business listings are the quiet step that matters most

Directory and map listings, Google Business Profile chief among them, are often left until last, and that’s roughly the right order, since they need a working website and a real address to point to. But they shouldn’t be skipped. This is frequently how a new business gets found by someone who wasn’t specifically searching for it in the first place, and a listing pointing at a domain that isn’t live yet does more harm than no listing at all. Consistent details across every listing, the same business name, address and website link, matter more than the number of directories a business appears on.

None of these five steps looks urgent in the first week of trading, when the UK’s companies register already holds more than 5.4 million entries according to Companies House statistics, most of them competing for the same searches and the same customers. Set up roughly in this order, the pieces reinforce each other instead of getting rebuilt twice: a domain that anchors the email, a website that gives the social accounts somewhere to send people, and listings that only work once there’s a real page behind them. Skipping straight to social media or a directory listing without the domain and website in place usually means going back to redo both later, once the business already has customers who expect to find a working site. Businesses paying attention to digital operations trends tend to treat this sequence as infrastructure rather than admin, and the ones focused on staying compliant online usually find the same order keeps them out of trouble later, not just with customers but with regulators too.
