Helping an Ageing Parent Stay in Their Own Home: Stairs, Bathrooms and the Small Changes That Matter

Most older people want the same thing: to stay in the home they know. Surveys across the UK and Ireland consistently find that the large majority of over-65s would rather adapt their current house than move into residential care. For adult children, that wish often turns into a practical question. What needs to change in the house so that Mum or Dad can keep living there safely, and in what order should we do it?

The good news is that most of the changes that make the biggest difference are small, relatively inexpensive and reversible. The bad news is that families usually start thinking about them after a fall rather than before one. This guide walks through the parts of the home that cause the most trouble, what to look at first, and how to avoid spending money on the wrong things.

Start with a walk-through, not a shopping list

Before buying anything, spend an hour walking through the house with your parent and watching how they actually use it. Where do they hesitate? Where do they reach for a wall or a piece of furniture? Which rooms do they avoid? A physiotherapist or occupational therapist can do this assessment properly, and in both the UK and Ireland a home assessment can be arranged through the local authority or the public health service. It is worth asking for one, because it often unlocks grants and it stops you guessing.

Three areas come up in almost every assessment: the stairs, the bathroom, and the general layout of floors and lighting.

The stairs: the single biggest risk in the house

Falls on stairs are the most common cause of serious injury at home for people over 70. Even where a parent manages the stairs today, the effort involved often means they stop going upstairs during the day, which quietly shrinks their living space to one floor.

There are three broad options, in rising order of cost.

The first is improving the staircase itself. A second handrail on the open side, brighter lighting at the top and bottom, contrasting tape on the nosing of each step and removing loose carpet runners all reduce risk for very little money. This should be done in every home with an older resident, whatever else you decide.

The second is a stairlift. Modern stairlifts are far removed from the bulky machines of twenty years ago. They fold flat against the wall when not in use, run on a battery so they still work during a power cut, and can be fitted to straight or curved staircases in a day. For many families this is the change that lets a parent keep using the whole house. A reputable supplier will survey the staircase first, explain whether a straight or curved rail is needed, and talk honestly about reconditioned units, which can cut the cost substantially. If you are looking at this option, the team at Irish Stairlifts is a useful example of how a specialist supplier approaches the survey, installation and aftercare, and their site explains the difference between straight and curved systems in plain language.

The third option is a through-floor home lift or moving the bedroom downstairs. These are bigger projects and usually only make sense where a stairlift is not possible or where mobility is expected to decline significantly.

The bathroom: where most falls actually happen

If the stairs are the highest-consequence risk, the bathroom is the highest-frequency one. Wet floors, stepping over a bath edge and standing up from a low toilet are all daily hazards.

Again, start small. Grab rails beside the toilet and in the shower are cheap and make an immediate difference, provided they are fixed properly into the wall rather than stuck on with suction cups. A raised toilet seat or a frame around the toilet helps anyone with weak knees or hips. Non-slip mats inside and outside the shower cost a few pounds.

The larger change is replacing the bath with a level-access shower. This is the adaptation most often funded by local grants, because it removes the most dangerous single movement in the house. If a full conversion is not possible yet, a bath board or a swivel bath seat is a reasonable interim step.

Floors, lighting and doorways

Loose rugs, trailing cables and thresholds between rooms are responsible for a surprising share of falls. Remove rugs entirely or fix them down. Tape or clip cables to the skirting. Where a doorway has a raised threshold, a small ramp wedge smooths it out.

Lighting matters more than people expect. Older eyes need roughly three times as much light as younger ones to see the same detail. Brighter bulbs in hallways, motion-activated night lights between the bedroom and bathroom, and a light switch reachable from the bed are all quick wins.

If a parent uses a walking frame or is likely to in future, check that internal doors are wide enough to pass through comfortably. Removing a door altogether is sometimes easier than widening a frame.

The kitchen and everyday tasks

The kitchen rarely causes falls but it often causes people to give up cooking, which affects nutrition and independence. Moving everyday items to waist height, adding a perching stool for tasks at the worktop, replacing heavy pans with lighter ones and fitting lever taps all help. A kettle tipper or a smaller kettle removes one of the most common scald risks.

Technology, used sparingly

A pendant alarm or a wearable fall detector gives everyone peace of mind, particularly for a parent living alone. Smart plugs that switch off a forgotten cooker, video doorbells and simple tablets for video calls are all worth considering, but introduce them one at a time. A parent who is overwhelmed by gadgets will simply stop using them.

Paying for it

Both the UK and Ireland offer grant support for home adaptations, typically means-tested, and covering things like stairlifts, level-access showers and ramps. The application process takes time, so start early rather than waiting for a crisis. Many suppliers also offer rental or reconditioned equipment, which is worth asking about for anything with a high upfront cost. Charities such as Age UK publish clear guides on what help is available and how to apply.

The order to do things in

If you take one thing from this article, let it be sequence. First, the free and cheap changes: rails, lighting, rugs, cables. Second, the bathroom, because that is where falls happen most often. Third, the stairs, because that is where the serious injuries happen. Fourth, everything else.

Done in that order, most homes can be made safe enough for a parent to stay put for years longer than the family expected. That is usually what the parent wanted all along.
