Xapo Bank vs CoinRabbit Review: Crypto Borrowing, Rates and Custody Side by Side

Xapo Bank and CoinRabbit both let a holder borrow against crypto without selling it, and that is close to where the similarity ends. This review walks through the two side by side: what each platform is, how their loans are structured, where the collateral sits, what borrowing actually costs, and which kind of borrower each one serves.

Platform Overviews

Xapo started out in 2013 as one of the earliest Bitcoin wallets, which is still how many people first meet the name. The banking side of the business arrived in 2021, when Xapo Bank opened in Gibraltar and built a full membership product around that wallet heritage. A member gets USD and BTC balances, a debit card, custody and investment access in one account, and the loan sits inside that bundle as one benefit among several rather than a standalone facility.

CoinRabbit launched in 2020 as a crypto asset management platform and has issued more than $1.45 billion in loans against 100% reserves. It is not a bank and does not present itself as one, so there is nothing to join and nothing to be approved for: the collateral qualifies the crypto loan, and funding takes about 10 minutes from start to finish. Lending sits alongside a wallet, swaps across 270+ pairs and yield products in the same account, while pledged collateral goes into segregated cold multisig wallets that are never lent out. Clients holding $500,000 and above have a separate track, the Private Program, which adds a private manager, custom loan terms and negotiated rates on top of the standard product.

Xapo Bank vs CoinRabbit: Crypto Loan Products and Terms

Xapo lends against Bitcoin only, held in a BTC Vault inside the app, with loan sizes from $1,000 to $5,000,000 and terms from 30 to 365 days. Initial LTV is offered at 20%, 30% or 40%, and 40% stays the ceiling even when an existing loan is topped up. Above 65% LTV the borrower receives a margin call, and at 80% the collateral is sold. The rate is variable, accrues daily and tracks US central bank policy, with Xapo quoting 10.5% at the time of writing. Nothing falls due during the term, the balance is repaid in full by the end of it, and repaying early costs nothing extra.

CoinRabbit accepts more than 350 assets and begins its LTV range where Xapo’s ceiling sits, running from 50% up to 90%. APR starts at 11.95% and, once the loan opens, holds for its life. Payout routing changes the cost: a loan paid into the CoinRabbit Wallet carries no origination fee. The liquidation threshold follows the configuration chosen and sits between 80% and 95%. Two structures are available, an open-ended loan with no maturity date where interest accrues monthly and is settled on repayment, and a fixed-term loan of roughly 30 days that prices below the open-ended equivalent at the same LTV.

The distance between a 40% ceiling and a 90% ceiling reads more clearly in collateral than in percentages. A borrower who needs $150,000 has to place $375,000 of Bitcoin with Xapo, while the same amount at CoinRabbit takes $300,000 at 50% LTV or roughly $167,000 at 90%. For someone borrowing precisely because they do not want to reduce a position, the size of the holding left unencumbered is the number worth watching.

Custody and Collateral Protection

Xapo holds loan collateral in a segregated BTC Vault and does not rehypothecate it. Its safety margin is built into the loan terms rather than into the custody arrangement, since a 40% starting ceiling leaves a wide corridor before the 65% margin call and the 80% liquidation point. That is conservative by design and behaves well in a fast drawdown.

CoinRabbit keeps collateral in segregated cold multisig wallets under the same  no-rehypothecation policy, against 100% reserves, and does not lend client assets out to generate yield. Here the safety margin sits with the borrower instead of in the loan terms, in the form of automatic top-ups when coverage slips, real-time position tracking, and risk-zone alerts by email or SMS before the position reaches its liquidation level. A borrower who wants Xapo’s level of conservatism can simply open at 50% LTV and hold that buffer, and the difference is that at CoinRabbit it is a setting rather than a limit.

Xapo Bank vs CoinRabbit: Fees and Cost Structure

Xapo’s loan pricing is clean. There is no arrangement fee, no setup fee, no closure fee, nothing charged for a margin call or a liquidation, and no penalty for repaying early, so the borrower pays interest on the drawn balance and nothing else. The charge sits outside the loan instead: $1,000 a year for the membership that makes borrowing possible in the first place, with a 30-day trial that is refundable if the member decides against continuing.

That fee changes the arithmetic on the rate. At 10.5% against CoinRabbit’s 11.95% starting APR, Xapo is 1.45 percentage points cheaper, which recovers $1,000 only on a balance of around $69,000 carried for a full year. A $30,000 loan running six months pays the same $1,000 and saves roughly $218 in interest, so anyone borrowing less than that, or for less than a year, will find the membership is the dominant line in the cost.

Above the threshold the rate advantage is real, with two qualifications attached. The rate is variable, so 1.45% describes today rather than the term, and it applies only to what Xapo will actually advance, which is capped at 40% of the Bitcoin pledged.

CoinRabbit charges nothing to open an account and nothing to keep one. A loan paid into the CoinRabbit Wallet carries no origination fee, so the quoted APR is the whole cost of the loan, while routing the payout to an external address adds a network fee. Fixed-term pricing sits below open-ended pricing at the same LTV, the rate rises with leverage from the 11.95% floor, and there is no recurring charge to spread across the balance.

Supported Assets and Features

Xapo is a Bitcoin institution and the loan book reflects it, with BTC as the only collateral it takes. Around the loan sits a full account, with balances in USD and BTC, a global debit card paying Bitcoin cashback, yield on both balances, access to US stocks and ETFs, inheritance planning, and a relationship manager. For a Bitcoin holder who wants a single account to run their financial life through, that bundle is the product and the loan is a feature of it.

CoinRabbit takes 350+ assets as collateral, so a holder of ETH, SOL or a mid-cap position can borrow against what they already own instead of converting into Bitcoin first, which Xapo’s model requires and which counts as a taxable disposal in most jurisdictions. The tooling around the loan is built for managing a position rather than for running an account: automatic collateral top-ups, real-time health monitoring, alerts by email or SMS, swaps across 270+ pairs, and a white-labelled lending API for partners.

Borrowing Experience and Eligibility

Once someone is a member, Xapo moves quickly. Pre-approval runs off holdings and account history, there is no traditional credit check, and cash can reach the account in under a minute. The work sits ahead of that point, since the borrower has to join Xapo Bank, clear onboarding and hold at least 0.1 BTC, and if the Bitcoin arrived less than three months earlier the bank may ask where it came from. Lending is also unavailable to residents of the United Kingdom and Australia, which settles the question for two sizable markets before any of the terms come into play.

CoinRabbit completes a loan end to end in about 10 minutes, and those 10 minutes are the entire process. There is no membership to buy, no approval stage and no credit check, because the collateral does the underwriting, and timings quoted elsewhere in this market are usually measured from approval onward, which leaves out the part that takes the time.

A borrower sizing up the platform before committing a big position can run a test-size loan first, take the whole flow from pledge to repayment, and watch how the collateral, the dashboard and the alerts behave before pledging anything meaningful. Support is human and available around the clock for every client.

Xapo Bank vs CoinRabbit: Programs for Larger Clients

Both platforms handle large balances differently from the rest of the book.

Xapo points that way from the start. Every member is assigned a relationship manager, pre-approved credit scales with holdings and account tenure, and capacity extends to $5,000,000. The 40% ceiling holds at every level, so a $5,000,000 loan still needs $12.5 million of Bitcoin standing behind it.

CoinRabbit’s Private Program opens at $500,000 in capital. Members get proactive assistance from a private manager, special rates and custom loan terms, a loan recovery option, portfolio resilience through cross-collateralization, direct transfers to bank accounts, OTC trading and access to exclusive events within a curated circle. The client base runs to high-net-worth investors, family offices, fintech companies, institutional investors, hedge funds and Bitcoin mining firms. Pricing at this level is negotiated rather than published, which is the part of the comparison no rate card settles.

Xapo Bank or CoinRabbit: Which One Fits You

Xapo fits a Bitcoin holder who wants a full banking relationship rather than a loan account: someone who will use the balances, the card and the yield, borrows conservatively at 40% LTV or below, carries enough of a balance for the membership to pay for itself, and is comfortable with a rate that moves with policy.

CoinRabbit fits a borrower holding assets beyond Bitcoin, who wants much more than 40% of a position working, who would rather fix a rate than track a central bank, who needs the money the same day. It also fits a client who wants personalized terms and a named manager without buying a membership to reach them.

Final Verdict

Xapo Bank builds its offer around three decisions: Bitcoin as the only collateral, a paid membership as the way in, and a conservative 40% ceiling with a relationship manager attached. That combination works for a member who uses the whole account and carries a balance large enough for the membership to pay for itself.

CoinRabbit is built for flexibility and speed. The borrower sets the terms rather than fitting into them, funding takes about 10 minutes with no approval stage, and clients from $500,000 move into the Private Program, where a private manager and personalized loan terms replace the standard product. Whether the membership is worth buying comes down to three figures a borrower already knows: what they hold, how much of it they want working, and how long the loan has to run.
