The concept of digital nomadism is still relatively new, but its popularity is growing exponentially. Imagine trying to explain to someone 50 years ago that in the future, people would be able to work full time on their personal computer, all while changing countries every month or two. That is now a reality, and of all the different countries to choose from, India is quickly shooting up the rankings.
India as a Travel Destination
Even looking past digital nomads, millions of international visitors make their way to India each year. Being a country with an extremely diverse population and geography, as well as an incredible cuisine that’s loved all over the world, it’s easy to see why.
Given the country’s huge size, travelling around India can often be an adventure in itself. That said, travelling across the country has become increasingly convenient over time. Major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata all serve as hubs that link diverse regions together seamlessly via bus and rail. Even remote locations are now more accessible thanks to improved infrastructure.
Something else that’s made travel in India even easier is the introduction of low-cost carriers. Airlines like IndiGo travel to dozens of locations, the majority of which are in India, all for very affordable prices. The Launch of ‘Workation Goa’
The coastal paradise of Goa has long been a popular tourist attraction, but in recent years, it’s been evolving to cater to this new demographic of digital nomads. Back in 2022, Goa’s Minister for Tourism, Rohan Khaunte, launched the Workation Goa initiative.
The goal of this initiative was simply to invite digital nomads to move to the region, allowing them to live in a peaceful and creative place with a good quality of life. Of course, infrastructure like high-speed and reliable internet are non-negotiable for digital nomads, and the government is aiming to have 100% internet connectivity in Goa within a couple of years from now.
In addition, the government of Goa is building out more and more co-working spaces in strategic locations along its beaches. Most digital nomads prefer to leave their accommodation and work from somewhere else, making this another important addition.
While there aren’t other government-led initiatives like this one in other parts of India, there are more and more co-working spaces popping up all over the country. If the Workation Goa movement is successful, this could potentially lead to infrastructure being built for this new group of travellers all over India.
Why India Appeals to Digital Nomads
There are many reasons why India is an appealing destination for digital nomads. One reason is that although this will change in the future, the majority of today’s digital nomads are from Western countries. India presents a completely different way of life from what they’re used to, and that makes it appealing.
Given that most digital nomads work either within the technology industry or industries adjacent to tech, the thriving startup scene in India is another appeal. Major cities like Bangalore and Mumbai have fast-growing startup ecosystems, and these communities serve as great places for networking and collaboration.
Something very underrated about India that makes it appealing is its diversity. From beaches to mega cities to mountain regions to islands to deserts, there aren’t many countries that can claim to have so many different types of travel experiences all within their borders.
One final aspect that can’t be overlooked is the cost of living. A good quality of life in India is often significantly cheaper than the same quality of life in major Western cities. This is an especially important point for digital nomads who are building startups, as they’re usually trying to make their money stretch as far as it can while they get their businesses up and running.
Where India’s digital nomad scene will go from here remains to be seen, but the signs are positive. When you combine the burgeoning tech scene with the low cost of living and the efforts of the government, it’s hard not to see India becoming one of the major digital nomad destinations in the world.
