Global Telecom Giants and Ericsson Launch Venture to Revolutionize Network APIs for Digital Innovation

Several of the world’s leading telecom operators, including América Móvil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Reliance Jio, Singtel, Telefonica, Telstra, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Vodafone, along with Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), have revealed plans to launch a joint venture aimed at consolidating and offering network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on a global scale to foster innovation in digital services. Network APIs enable streamlined access to and usage of network functions. This venture will facilitate the adoption and accessibility of shared APIs across various telecom providers, broadening the reach to developer platforms.

Modern mobile networks are equipped with advanced, intelligent features that have traditionally been unavailable to developers. Moreover, the process of integrating the capabilities of numerous telecom operators has proven difficult. This new entity seeks to unify network APIs globally, ensuring that future applications can function universally across all networks, accelerating innovation for developers.

The availability of advanced network functions will pave the way for the next era of app development, empowering developers to create new solutions across different industries. These could include fraud prevention for financial transactions or adjusting video quality dynamically based on device status for streaming services.

The newly formed company will deliver network APIs to a vast ecosystem of developer platforms, including hyperscalers, Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) providers, System Integrators (SIs), and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). The offering will be built on CAMARA APIs, an open-source initiative led by the GSMA and the Linux Foundation. Both Vonage and Google Cloud will collaborate with the venture, offering their developer networks and partnerships. Shareholders in the venture will contribute funding and vital resources, such as Ericsson’s platform, telecom industry expertise, and established relationships with global telecom operators, alongside their developer community insights and network APIs.

Additional telecom operators are encouraged to participate in this new initiative, further advancing the telecom industry and enhancing the developer experience. Operators like Three Sweden (Hi3G Access) are already exploring the opportunity to join.

The transaction is expected to close in early 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other standard conditions. Once completed, Ericsson will own 50% of the new venture, with the remaining 50% shared among the telecom operators. The platform and ecosystem will adhere to the GSMA Open Gateway principles, ensuring it remains open and non-discriminatory, maximizing value creation across the industry.
