UK Tightens Immigration Rules for Overseas Students

At the beginning of the year, the UK government announced that they’re planning to tighten up the immigration rules for overseas students. However, this now becomes a reality. New immigration rules will prevent postgraduate students from bringing their family members to the UK.

New Immigration Rules

The UK government implemented new immigration restrictions for postgraduate students enrolled in non-research programs. More precisely, they won’t be able to bring their families to the UK. This announcement was made before the official statistics revealed a record-breaking 700,000 legal migrants that entered the country from the beginning of the year.

Statistics show that in 2020, 135,788 foreign students got a visa, which was nine times more than in 2019. Regarding the latest happenings, the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, informed the public that these restrictions should contribute to reducing the overall migration levels.

However, it remains uncertain how this policy will affect official migration statistics, as individuals who come to the UK, including the students’ families, are not included in that number. In addition, this is not the first try to reduce migration levels, but previous measures didn’t have an acceptable threshold.

Moreover, the number of visas granted to international students increases more and more. Mainly, this rise can be because of the introduction of study visa requirements for European Economic Area students after Brexit, as well as because of the rule change in 2019 that allows international students to remain in the UK for two years after their studies and find a job.

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, expressed her concerns about the unprecedented surge in migrant visas and emphasized that the country must do something and tighten this pathway. She also stated that the new measure creates a balance between decreasing migration and protecting the economic contributions that students bring to the UK.

There was also a debate within the government about whether they should extend the restrictions to all postgraduate studies, not only to those in the non-research programs. However, there are mixed feelings, as some ministers like the Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, think that the longer stay of foreign students brings great economic benefits for the country.

Despite the new measures, the UK continues to be a hub for international students, with the Higher Education Statistics Agency recording 679,970 international students in the academic year 2021-2022, 120,140 of which came from the EU.

Many are drawn to the nation’s rich cultural offerings and thriving entertainment industry, including the 10 best online casinos in the country, as according to latest statistics, about one-fourth of the UK population gambles regularly. The UK also has a globally-influential music scene, with events like Glastonbury and Reading Festival, and a rich sporting culture, from football to cricket, which add to the appeal of studying and living in the UK.

Thoughts on the Immigration Rules

The BBC interviewed two Nigerian students that are students at Wolverhampton University. Each of them shared their perspective on the restrictions.

Rotimi is pursuing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, and she says she understands the politician’s desire to reduce immigration levels. However, she continues the story by saying that many students that come to the UK search for a lifetime experience that includes having their families with them. She also believes that without being able to bring their families, a lot of people may choose not to study in the UK and explore alternative study options.

The other student, Titilope, is an undergraduate who is studying mental health nursing. Unfortunately, she is one of the students that is most affected by the rules as she can’t bring her family. Therefore, she states that it’s essential for students to be able to bring their families as it helps them focus better. In addition, she also emphasizes the amount of support that the family provides during hard times that one student may go through. According to her, having your family by your side reduces the feeling of isolation and offers comfort.

Furthermore, the umbrella group for British Universities, Universities UK (UUK), also noticed a significant increase in dependent visas. The UUK’s international arm director, Jamie Arrowsmith, suggests that the rules may be reasonable but that the government must engage in monitoring the impact of the changes in the universities. He also states that these restrictions will mainly have a disproportional effect on women and students from specific countries.

Another point of view on this whole situation comes from Adam Habib, director of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. According to him, this decision will have terrible financial, governmental, and human effects. He warns that this can lead to financial crises for universities that heavily depend on international student fees. Overall, Habib is a bit pessimistic regarding this whole situation, as he believes it may even cause strikes and put pressure on vice-chancellors.
