A recent study by Pickfords shows that London is the most popular domestic destination for UK residents looking to relocate.
Pickfords, the UK’s leading international removal company, has announced this and other findings in their latest Move Monitor. This annual report is based on data gathered from approximately 40,000 Pickfords clients who relocated within the UK.
The data showed that the number of Pickfords customers relocating to or around London increased from 7% to 8% in 2021, indicating the capital’s growing popularity. With its world-renowned museums, thriving economy and exciting music scene, it’s no surprise London remains a popular relocation destination for UK citizens.
Despite initial reports of people leaving London due to the availability of remote work options following the Covid-19 pandemic, the city’s diversity, vibrancy, and abundant career opportunities have continued to attract individuals to live and work there. As a result, London remains a popular destination for those seeking an exciting urban lifestyle and professional growth.
Edinburgh and Glasgow maintained their position as the second and third most popular domestic destinations, with hundreds more people flocking to Scotland. Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh is full of character and history, with a buzzing nightlife and arts scene, so it’s no wonder so many people want to move there.
Housing costs in Glasgow are significantly lower than those in Edinburgh, which makes it an affordable place to live. The city’s diverse economy is growing fast, which means job opportunities are plentiful.
Leeds and Newcastle also managed to maintain their position in sixth and tenth place, respectively, for the second year in a row.
However, the rankings saw some movement, with Manchester and Bristol making their way into the top five destinations. This knocked Nottingham into seventh place after being in fourth position the previous year.
Manchester is recognised as a hub for media and offers ample employment opportunities while being comparatively less expensive than other major cities in the country. Bristol has become increasingly popular, possibly due to the current property boom. This has attracted remote workers from London and other areas to relocate to this culturally-vibrant location.
Pickfords’ spokesperson Sophie Gower isn’t surprised to see London retain its position as the most popular domestic destination. “The annual Move Monitor provides us with valuable insights into the latest moving trends, allowing us to identify areas of growth and tailor our services to meet the changing needs of our customers. We will continue to work hard to provide the best possible moving experience for all our customers.”
