SAPHNA has announced the launch of a nationwide petition advocating for every school in the UK to have a dedicated school nurse. This initiative aims to address the growing concerns related to children’s physical and mental health, which have worsened due to a 35% reduction in school nurses since 2009. The focus is on providing essential support for school-aged children and young people who are facing challenges such as obesity, mental health issues, and respiratory conditions.
In light of the Darzi Review, it has been noted that the reduction in school nurse numbers by the previous government has had a direct impact on children’s health. The CEO and OBE of SAPHNA, Sharon White, stated: “Our children’s health is in crisis, and school nurses are vital in addressing this.”
She continued: “By reinstating a school nurse in every school, we can ensure every child receives the care they need to thrive.”
The presence of a school nurse in every school would facilitate:
- The prevention of illness and the promotion of health and wellbeing
- Early identification and intervention for physical and mental health problems
- Protection and safeguarding of children and young people
- Support for students in educational settings, their communities, and their homes
- Reduction in health disparities, especially in underserved regions
The petition is now open for public support and seeks to attract parliamentary attention. For additional details or to sign the petition, visit SAPHNA’s Petition Page at SAPHNA’s Petition Page.
