Since the beginning of the Russian Invasion, Ukraine’s defense industry with its high-tech electronic warfare has become a true revelation to many countries of the West. A European country attacked by powerful Russia is now a beacon of rapid technological advancements in the realm of electronic warfare. Attacked by 200-300 drones per week, Ukraine and its leading defense firms, like Kvertus, have accelerated the internal development of countermeasures. And the country that was considered a losing party before 2022, is leading the charge in 2025.
Drone Countermeasures, Developed by Kvertus
Kvertus is one of Ukraine’s top technological companies that specializes in electronic warfare systems. Since the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia, this technological firm has been at the forefront of designing and developing technologies that would help Ukrainian soldiers fight against enemy drones.
“As a representative of the Ukrainian defense industry, I have witnessed the transformation of the industry from a post-Soviet backwater to a confident competitor for the world’s top military technology manufacturers. And I have a real chance to witness how Ukraine will go further and become a trendsetter and the one who will keep the global bar for quality and efficiency in the defense industry”, says Yaroslav Filimonov, the Kvertus CEO.
From Hedgehog Backpacks to Ground Defence: Kvetus’ Products
The company has different technologies under production, yet there are two popular products that are considered the firm’s flagships: unmanned ground vehicles and the “hedgehog”.
- UGVs or unmanned ground vehicles are the equipment featuring the most sophisticated electronic hardware capabilities. UGVs were designed to serve two purposes at once. On the one hand, they are capable of distributing enemy drone operations. On the other hand, they help soldiers safely evacuate wounded soldiers from dangerous combat zones without any additional losses.
- “Hedgehog” backpacks are portable devices designed with special antennas, which, when launched, create a protective electronic dome, jamming enemy drones across different frequency ranges. To date, the instrument can neutralize enemy threats within a radius of 300 meters. The “hedgehog” is highly effective and versatile, which makes it irreplaceable in modern realities.
Other anti-drone systems include products for military autos, soldiers, etc. According to Kyiv Post, the AD G-6+ anti-drone gun that looks like “something straight out of a sci-fi movie”, is the most recognized weapon unit by Kvertus. This $13,464 gun suppresses the control of UAV channels, serving as a drone countermeasure for soldiers.
Electronic Warfare “On Demand”
According to Filimonov, some drone countermeasures are produced according to soldiers’ demands. With the battlefield situation constantly changing, the company adapts to current needs. He says: “We constantly go to the front line, almost every week, and test our equipment in combat conditions. During one of these trips, the guys say, ‘Man, the f**king FPV drones are a nightmare, do something.”
That is how Kvetus developed the jamming station KVERTUS AD COUNTER FPV, widely used by the military in 2024.
The Global Implications of Ukraine’s Modern Warfare Strategies
Ukraine believes it’s not enough to have only Kvertus with new electronic warfare capabilities on its side. The country’s defense sector has shown the world its significant improvement since 2022. According to the Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, the current defence sector includes around 500 enterprises with 100,000+ employees.
Ukraine quickly integrated artificial intelligence in electronic warfare. In 2024, specialists introduced new generations of drones able to lock onto identified targets to counter Russia’s drones. Ukraine is now also active in designing and developing drones to boost its missile programs. The core goal is overwhelming Russia’s defense and making sure all strikes are precise. Ai integration, in this case, allows the development of highly autonomous systems.
International Influence of Ukraine’s Defense Tech Pioneers
Altogether, this has a major influence on the global stage of modern warfare strategies. Allied countries are now interested in Ukraine’s battle-tested electronics by Kvertus and other firms. The American Publisher “Fortune”, for instance, mentions Kvertus as an “Ukrainian company that predicted the threat from drones”. According to the author, “By relaxing or lifting export bans on Ukraine, the West has an opportunity to benefit from the lessons Ukraine has had to learn in order to protect itself from swarms of weaponized drones. This would also enable Ukraine to replace the economic losses from its agricultural industry and put defense at the heart of its rebuild.”
Allies and the public are interested in learning from Ukraine’s experience and want to integrate such technology into their own defense systems.
Drone Industry Remain the Key Priority in the Battlefield Technology
Among defense tech pioneers, Kvertus has developed electronic warfare and electronic intelligence (ELINT) equipment since 2017. It’s clear now that the drone warfare prevails in the sky. Ukraine has taken a proactive approach to this, offering other countries rather valuable insights and explaining that the speed of decision-making and technological evolution can help the West preserve its strategic superiority.
