Sunday afternoons are the best time of the week for many. It’s a time to relax and enjoy yourself, in whatever capacity that may be.
For many, that’s a trip to the pub, and of course there’s nothing wrong with that. A nice, quiet pint in the corner of a pub, fire roaring is idyllic.
But for many, alcohol has become problematic. Especially of late. More and more people are suffering from addiction, and at Primrose Lodge, an alcohol detox clinic in Surrey, there has been an influx of patients arrive in a bid to get sober.
So, perhaps that pub in front of the fire isn’t for everyone. But, of course, a Sunday afternoon in Surrey almost certainly is. But what are the best options for you this Sunday?
Box Hill
The famous Box Hill is a great starting point for cyclists, walkers or people who just want a stroll amongst nature.
It’s an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers some quite stunning views of the local area. Just a stone’s throw from Dorking, there are many trails to take, as well as cycle paths where you can ride the same roads as the Olympians did at London 2012.
RHS Garden Wisley
For those that like the tranquility of a garden, RHS Garden Wisley is an excellent spot, just outside Woking. The gardens span a breathtaking 240 acres, all carefully manicured with lush flower borders, exotic plants, rock gardens and serene walks around the lakeside.
You’ll also find an excellent cafe there for a spot of lunch or tea, making it the ideal spot to while away a Sunday afternoon.
Hampton Court Palace
A world renowned attraction, Hampton Court Palace is a bucket list destination for anyone living in the area, or anyone visiting. It’s a great way to step back in time and experience what it was like in Tudor times, while the buildings also claim some excellent displays of Baroque architecture.
Of course, Hampton Court Palace is also well known for its maze. Just don’t spend too much time in there or you might miss work in the morning!
Polesden Lacey
If you want something quintessentially British, and perhaps even Surrey, then Dorking’s Polesden Lacey is a gorgeous National Trust site that is also ideal for dogs.
Inside the house, it’s a fine example of how the high society lived in the early 1900s, while the grounds are perfect for a ramble, with great views over the North Downs and a great spot to soak up the sun or the crisp winter breeze.
Guildford Castle Gardens
Moving over to Guildford, the largest town in Surrey, the Castle Gardens are delightfully serene and ideal for a picnic. The castle itself dates back to the 12th century, and has been used as a royal palace, a prison and a private residence during its time in existence.
Now it’s a place for locals to relax, explore the town’s history, and escape the hustle and bustle of the town centre.
