Technology is now a significant part of everyday life. It’s hard to imagine a time when people used a newspaper to get their sports news, as smartphones, tablets, and computers now dominate our daily activities. Technology does make our lives easier and everything more convenient, but many people wonder if today’s society is too dependent on it.
There are, of course, an unlimited number of benefits to using technology, with the dependence on computers and phones also having a negative impact on humans. It has led to many people being completely preoccupied with their devices. Some studies have shown that almost two-thirds of people who own a mobile device have “nomophobia,” a term describing when a person fears being away from or losing their phone.
The Effects of Technology
People don’t have to be addicted to technology for it to have a negative effect on our overall health, as it now controls almost all aspects of our lives. However, when not used in moderation, it can be harmful despite all its benefits and will make us too dependent on it.
Fifty years ago, there were a lot of ways people entertained themselves without an electronic device. People would do things like go to the movies, attend live events, go to the amusement park, or even play a football game with their friends. Although we still do these things, it’s much less than before.
The way we communicate has been affected a lot by technology. Not that long ago, people had to communicate with others mainly in person. Over the years, new technology has given us the ability to communicate with anyone, no matter where they are, by making a phone call, sending a text, or shooting them an email.
Communication is Easier Than Ever
We can now talk to anyone in the world with a click of a button unless, of course, they don’t have access to the internet. This may be very convenient, but it has helped break down the basic principles of communication between humans. So many people have forgotten what it’s like to communicate with others without using an electronic device.
Another major effect that technology has had on society is how we research information. In the past, people got their information from reading books with the help of a librarian or interviewing an expert on a specific subject. This was always time-consuming, and sometimes you didn’t even find the information you were looking for. At present, all you need to do is type your question into an online search engine to find an unlimited number of answers, but because there is so much information available, not all of it can be trusted.
The Dangers
Technology dependence can have a physical, mental, and emotional impact on our lives and others if we’re not careful. For example, it has been linked to depression and anxiety, whether from social media pressure, cyberbullying, being withdrawn from society, or just the bright screen on your phone that can be harmful to your sleep.
As humans become more attached to their devices, the rate of technological addiction has also increased. This addiction is defined as the uncontrollable urge to constantly use devices and their programs and apps that are with them. This is more common among teens, but younger children and adults also see the effects of this addiction.
Finding a Balance
Like anything else that humans tend to overindulge in, moderation is a way to avoid becoming too dependent on technology. Finding a healthy balance could be as simple as limiting the time spent on your phone or finding the answer to a question or problem without searching online for a solution.
Technology is a great resource to have available, but we need to acknowledge that we should try to limit the potential of depending on it without dismissing it altogether. There is a lot we can do to minimize our dependence on technology.
