Whenever casino action is depicted in films, the most commonly portrayed games are poker, roulette and, to a lesser extent, blackjack. The latter has always been extremely popular with casino-goers and continues to flourish at online platforms today, with live dealer blackjack tables transporting players instantly into a virtual casino setting.
Simply known as 21, blackjack is an accessible card game, and there are several reasons why it remains so iconic. It doesn’t have the big drama and tension of roulette or craps, and it may not carry the intensity and competitiveness of poker, but it still manages to be a titan of casino games. But why?
Where Did Blackjack Come From?
The game of blackjack reportedly started back in 17th-century France when it was called “Vingt-et-un,” but its origins have also been linked to a game called “Chemin de Fer,” among others. There’s even debate about whether blackjack originated in France because it is also mentioned in old Spanish literature, where it’s known as “veintiuno.”
Either way, the game eventually spread its wings and reached England, and from there, it found its way across the Atlantic to the Americas. The name “blackjack” was reportedly adopted because of a special rule that used to be a part of the game. This was where the Ace of Spades combined with either black jack (spades or clubs) would reward a player with a big payout of 10/1 odds.
Game Simplicity
A key factor that makes blackjack a favourite is that, in essence, it’s an easy game. The aim of the game is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over, but it’s how the goal can be achieved that’s at the heart of blackjack’s iconic status.
Players have agency over decisions in the game. They decide how much they want to push the limit to get to the target, with options like standing, splitting or calling for another card, depending on strategy. Occasionally, side bets enter the picture, but for standard play, blackjack is very accessible to beginners. It also allows skilled players to flex their strategic muscles at the other end of the scale.
Bringing The Skill
When players roll up to a roulette table, drop some money in a slot, or even head to a bingo room, they rely on luck to go their way. There is no control they can put into those games through skill, which is where blackjack stands out from the crowd.
Players can use skill and strategy to try and influence the outcome in blackjack while relying on a bit of luck. Direct decisions over what actions to take mean things aren’t entirely left to chance like in other casino games. That skill element adds a very different layer to blackjack. Blackjack skills also include learning the percentages of outcomes depending on the cards in play and card counting.
The House Edge
Players can react after seeing the dealer’s up card, influencing the game’s edge. The house will always win in the long term because of the edge. However, seasoned players will recognise the advantage of playing games that carry lower ones, and that is where blackjack is strong.
The standard edge in blackjack, which is the mathematical advantage that the operator has, runs up to 2%. But that’s just the standard edge the house takes against a player adopting a basic strategy. For someone experienced and skilled in the art of blackjack, a player who knows how to leverage percentages, that edge can come down to less than 1%.
That feature, again where players’ decisions can have a positive influence, makes blackjack unique. Another prominent feature of the game is that there is a “history” of the current deck. When a card, like the 10 of clubs, has gone, it’s out of play, and with enough focus and skill, that knowledge can be leveraged. As the blackjack deck isn’t reshuffled after every hand, the odds will change going forward, unlike the spin of a roulette wheel, where the odds are the same every time.
The Perfect Blend
Many other reasons are intertwined that keep the status of blackjack high, including the speed of the game, which is just rapid-fire short bursts of play and nothing protracted like poker. It’s also a social game in a land-based casino, with the very minimum of interacting with the dealer and at online casinos, which happens through text chat.
When you step back and analyse the popular casino games, it’s easy to see why blackjack retains such great appeal. The captivating game strikes the perfect balance of being analytical, skill-influenced and entertaining.
