The game of blackjack reportedly started back in 17^th-century France when it was called “Vingt-et-un,” but its origins have also been linked to a game called “Chemin de Fer,” among others. There’s even debate about whether blackjack originated in France because it is also mentioned in old Spanish literature, where it’s known as “veintiuno.”

Either way, the game eventually spread its wings and reached England, and from there, it found its way across the Atlantic to the Americas. The name “blackjack” was reportedly adopted because of a special rule that used to be a part of the game. This was where the Ace of Spades combined with either black jack (spades or clubs) would reward a player with a big payout of 10/1 odds.

Game Simplicity

A key factor that makes blackjack a favourite is that, in essence, it’s an easy game. The aim of the game is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over, but it’s how the goal can be achieved that’s at the heart of blackjack’s iconic status.

Players have agency over decisions in the game. They decide how much they want to push the limit to get to the target, with options like standing, splitting or calling for another card, depending on strategy. Occasionally, side bets enter the picture, but for standard play, blackjack is very accessible to beginners. It also allows skilled players to flex their strategic muscles at the other end of the scale.

As the blackjack deck isn’t reshuffled after every hand, the odds will change going forward, unlike the spin of a roulette wheel, where the odds are the same every time.

Many other reasons are intertwined that keep the status of blackjack high, including the speed of the game, which is just rapid-fire short bursts of play and nothing protracted like poker.
